Susan Powell's parents accuse her killer husband's father as it is revealed he skipp
The parents of Susan Powell have accused her father-in-law of knowing where the missing Utah mom is or where his son 'put her.'
Charles and Judy Cox, appeared on Fox News to discuss new developments in the case. 'I'm convinced that his dad knew everything that was going on, if not helping with it,' Charles Cox claimed.
It came as The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Josh Powell’s father, Steven Powell, called in sick to work for two days a day after his daughter-in-law Susan Powell disappeared in December 2009.
He worked for the Washington State Correctional Industries at the time, selling furniture made by inmates.
The days Steven Powell were away from work coincide with when Josh Powell rented a Ford Focus and drove it 800 miles before returning it, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
Steven Powell has not cooperated with police over Susan's disappearance. He is currently serving a sentence for possession of child pornography and for secretly videotaping women and girls.
Josh Powell killed himself and his two sons Braden and Charlie in a gas explosion in their rented Washington state home in February - two years after their mother Susan went missing.
Despite evidence suggesting Josh played a role in Susan's disappearance, he was never arrested by authorities in West Valley City, Utah.
As a result, Susan Powell's family believe the authorities are at least partially responsible for the death of her two sons, Braden, 5, and Charles, 7.
'Look what it did -- it killed my nephews, by not putting [Josh Powell] behind bars when he should have been,' Denise Cox, Susan's sister, told ABC News. 'They didn't act on anything that they should've acted on.'
Even if an arrest was made, though, that doesn't mean Josh Powell would have stayed in jail, Susan Powell's father pointed out.
'If they did arrest him and he was convicted, then our grandchildren would be alive,' Charles Cox said on Fox. 'But that's a big 'if' because arresting a person and convicting them are two separate things, especially with no body.'
Josh Powell was the only named person of interest in the case but was never charged or arrested.
He claimed he took his young sons, then four and two, camping on the freezing winter night around 12.30am. He says he believes his wife ran off with another man.
Authorities searched the desert for twelve days in the area where Josh Powell said he went camping that night. At one point, they said they found a 'shallow grave' after cadaver dogs alerted them to the spot. But they found no human remains.
They had previously been living with their father and grandfather, but they were removed last year after Powell's father, Steve, was arrested for investigation of voyeurism and possessing child pornography.
Josh was living at his father's home in the Tacoma suburb of Puyallup at the time, and a judge gave Susan Powell's parents custody of the boys.
Authorities had searched the home looking for evidence in Susan's disappearance and found child pornography and other troubling videos in Steve Powell's bedroom.
Prosecutors said that for at least a decade, he had been secretly filming women, including Susan Powell, and that he shot footage of two young female neighbors as they took baths and sat on the toilet.
Shortly after Susan Powell disappeared, authorities found blood evidence on a floor next to a sofa and determined that it was Susan Powell's. The sofa appeared to have been recently cleaned, and two fans had been set up to blow on it.
Investigators found several life insurance policies on Susan Powell that totaled $1.5million and determined that Josh Powell had filed paperwork to withdraw her retirement account money about 10 days after her disappearance.
A safety deposit box used by Susan Powell had a hand-written letter titled 'Last will & testament for Susan Powell,' according to the documents. She wrote in that letter that she did not trust her husband and that they'd been having marital troubles for four years.
The letter also said that 'if Susan Powell dies it may not be an accident, even if it looks like one,' according to the documents.
Josh Powell always maintained his innocence and said he had taken their boys, then 2 and 4, on a midnight camping trip in freezing temperatures the night she disappeared.
One of the children, Charlie, told investigators in an interview shortly after his mom disappeared that she had gone on the camping trip with them but did not come back home and he did not know why, according to the files. A few weeks later, he told a church teacher with no emotion: 'My mom is dead.'
Investigators had found a gas can, tarps and a shovel in Josh Powell's vehicle shortly after the investigation began.
Susan Powell's cellphone was also in the car, and Josh Powell 'did not have an answer as to why,' according to the documents. One person interviewed by police said Powell had once made comments about how to kill someone and dispose of the body.
Susan Powell's purse, keys, credit cards and other belongings were found in the couple's master bedroom.
