An Opelika youth looking for his dog found bones that are believed to be human in a wooded area near Bennett's Trailer Park near the 1000 block of York Avenue, authorities said.
"The remains appear to be human, however that must be determined by forensic examination. The remains will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a post-mortem examination and possible identification," Opelika police Capt. Bobby Kilgore said in a press release.
It was unknown if the remains were of a male or a female.
Detectives remained at the scene well into the night Friday to recover any evidence present.
"A juvenile looking for his dog found the remains located along a creek bank in a wooded area near the 1000 block of York Avenue," Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said in a press release.
