Child's decomposed remains found in container in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Texas - Preliminary results from tests on a body found in Madison County show the person was a girl between two-and-five years old. The girl's remains were found on a I-45 feeder road in Madison County, according to KBTX.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, the child's race has not been determined in the initial testing by the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas. A medical device used with feeding tubes was found inside the girl, and the skeletal frame was underdeveloped. Manufacturing information on that medical equipment will be used as part of the investigation.

The only other identifying details released were that the girl had black hair approximately 16 inches long.

According to authorities, no signs of trauma -- including tool marks -- were found on the decomposed body, which was found in a container behind a bush along the side of I-45 Saturday by a rancher who was mowing. Madison County Sheriff Travis Neeley estimates the remains had been out there for "possibly several months."

Neeley also says there are some aspects of the crime, like the fact that it was right off the interstate, that lead him to think this wasn't a killing in his county. There are no persons of interest at this point. He said this case would be difficult to solve, partly because of how badly the girl's body was decomposed.

While ruled as a homicide by the sheriff's office, a cause of death has not been determined.

In nearby Madisonville, residents told KBTX that this was out of the norm.

"This is a good, friendly place. We all help our neighbors and do nice things for each other. It doesn't seem like a violent place," said Jill Yeager.

    Renee Bosley agreed.

"For the most part, we are a good, down to earth, little town that everybody seems to get along, and it's just a really nice place to live," Bosley said.

Mystery surrounds young girl's remains found in Madisonville

After a rancher mowing his pasture along Interstate 45 near Madisonville found the decomposing remains of a preschool-aged girl on Saturday, authorities ruled her death a homicide and said they have a lead.

The bones of the girl, who medical examiners say was 2 to 5 years old and had 16-inch-long black hair as well as an underdeveloped body, were found in a container along with a surgically implanted medical device that is commonly used for feeding tubes.

Travis Neeley, the sheriff of Madison County, said Wednesday that the medical device - part of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, or PEG tube - still had a legible stock number and a partial name of the manufacturer. He said that number could help investigators identify the girl and figure out how she died. He hopes to determine the manufacturer this week and ask it where a device with that stock number would have been shipped.

Medical examiners may also be able to extract DNA samples from the girl's bones to compare to national registries of missing children, Neeley said.

In the meantime, police do not have any suspects.

"It's like a 500-piece puzzle just throwed up in the air and you've got to put it back together," Neeley said Wednesday.

The girl's autopsy report did not determine her race and did not find any tool marks or other signs of trauma, according to the sheriff's office in the rural county of 14,000. Her death was ruled a homicide, but that could change if another explanation emerges.

If she died of natural causes, Neeley said, whoever abandoned or tossed her body could face charges of desecration of a corpse. Her remains were in a container about 16 inches by 30 inches that was sitting on top of the ground.

Her body was found in a pasture that's part of a 400-acre property bordering the I-45 feeder road. Investigators believe her body had been there for more than six months.

The feeding tube entered the girl's abdomen through her ribs and went directly into the stomach. A medical encyclopedia says such gastronomy tubes can be temporary or permanent treatment for people who cannot swallow or children with birth defects of the mouth, esophagus or stomach.

Dr. Christina Propst, a Houston-area physician, said small children might get feeding tubes if they either cannot or will not be fed by mouth or if they are not gaining weight appropriately. Sometimes, she said, "genetic syndromes and/or malformations in the upper gastrointestinal tract can make swallowing normally impossible so a tube will be put in until everything is repaired surgically."

"Of course, sadly, neglect and trauma can be an issue too," Propst added.

The sheriff speculated to KTRK (Channel 13) that young parents may have panicked after their sick daughter died while they were on I-45 and decided it was risky to report the death to law enforcement.

It was the first discovery of a child's body in the county since 1990, Neeley said, when a mentally ill man suffering from hallucinations pushed his 4-year-old daughter out of his vehicle. She was then struck and killed by another driver who did not see her in the dark.

No other agencies are involved in the current investigation, but the sheriff said he would reach out to other agencies when they have more information.
