Unhappy Hailey Dunn Missing: Possible Remains of Texas Teen Cheerleader Found

Human remains have been discovered in a pasture 40 miles from Colorado City, Texas, where 13–year-old Hailey Dunn disappeared more than a year ago.

Authorities in Big Spring, Texas, confirmed that human remains were found near the McMahon Wrinkle Airpark Tuesday afternoon. The airpark is about one mile from the home of the mother of Shawn Adkins, Hailey Dunn's mother's boyfriend at the time of her disappearance, and the only named person of interest in the case.

Det. Sgt. Tony Everett said the remains appeared to have been there "for a long period of time," according to the San Angelo Standard Times. Everett said an FBI evidence recovery team from Dallas is expected to process the scene this morning.

No official connection has been made between the remains found Tuesday and Hailey Dunn.

Adkins, who was 25 at the time of the girl's disappearance, was called one of several people of interest in January 2011 by investigators in Colorado City. He was the live-in boyfriend of her mother, Billie Dunn, but the couple is reportedly no longer together in the aftermath of Hailey's disappearance.

Adkins was the last person to see the 13-year-old cheerleader Dec. 27, 2010. Dunn, 33, reported her daughter's disappearance the next day.

Both Dunn and Adkins failed polygraph exams during the initial investigation into Hailey Dunn's disappearance. Billie Dunn took a lie detector test twice, and the first test ended prematurely when investigators discovered she was under the influence of narcotics. The second exam indicated that she had been deceptive, according to the affidavit.

Adkins took three polygraph exams. The first two times he walked out of the room before the test was completed. The third time he was found to be deceptive during the first part of the exam.

During the second stage of the exam, Adkins revealed that Hailey might be in Scurry County, Texas. Investigators deemed him to be telling the truth. When pressed about a more precise location for the girl, Adkins refused to complete the test, according to the affidavit.

Investigators said that Adkins has given contradictory statements about the day Hailey disappeared.

Adkins also told investigators that he was fired from his job the day Hailey disappeared. Adkins worked for a company that does oil well casing and logging. His boss, however, told investigators that he wasn't fired, but abruptly left work minutes after showing up, according to the affidavit.

Adkins told investigators that he drove straight to his mother's home in Big Spring, Texas. Cell phone records show Adkins making calls from Dunn's home between 6:35 a.m. until 6:56 a.m., the court papers state.

Dunn left for work as a receptionist at a hospital at 6:20 a.m.

"According to all reports, Hailey Dunn would have been alone in the residence during this time period," the affidavit said.

Adkins eventually went to the home of his mother and used her computer. That computer has been taken as evidence, the affidavit said.

On the evening of Hailey's disappearance, Dunn and Adkins reportedly withdrew money from two banks to buy drugs, according to the affidavit.

There are also claims that the couple had a New Year's party, just days after the 13-year-old girl disappeared, according to the affidavit.

Dunn denied that, telling the Associated Press that just a few friends came over for drinks.

Dunn told the Associated Press that she had nothing to do with her daughter's disappearance. She said that she asked Adkins to move out Jan. 5.

Records show that police were called to Dunn's home in February 2010 after Adkins threatened to hurt Billie and Hailey Dunn.

Families of missing people await news of positive ID of remains

Family members and ardent supporters of Hailey Dunn are not the only ones playing the waiting game.

An autopsy has yet to be performed on human remains discovered Tuesday in Big Spring by fuel tank workers, and no identification has been made.

According to the Department of Public Safety website, five missing people were last seen in Big Spring. The criminal investigations date back to 1979, according to the DPS. In two cases, foul play is possible.

Hailey was last reported seen in Colorado City, about 40 miles from Big Spring, in late December 2010.

Deanna Hartford, the mother of William "Arlin" Bynum, said she was eagerly awaiting any news from law enforcement. Bynum was last seen in the city Aug, 15, 2003, leaving a bar and grill with an unidentified man after signing a $17 tab.

Bynum's truck in the restaurant's parking lot was the only evidence left behind, Hartford said.

Hartford said police have told her it is likely her son was killed; however, they have not found his body.

"If it can't be my son, I hope it's that little girl," Hartford said from her home in Biloxi, Miss., on Thursday about the remains found this week. "I hope her mother can have some peace."

Hartford said she usually makes a weekly call to the Big Spring Police Department and Texas Rangers, seeking information on her son's unsolved case.

Since her son's disappearance, Hartford said she has done everything she can to find her son by traveling back and forth from Mississippi to Big Spring to continue to put up signs around the area in hope of someone coming forth with information.

This week, she said, she was not informed of the news of the discovery of the remains until a reporter called her home Wednesday.

"There have been so many ups and downs," she said of the extensive search to find her son. "There's nothing like losing a child. That's something you never get over.

"We're anxiously waiting. I just want to bring him home, so I know where he's at, so he has a final resting place, Hartford said. "I realize after nine years there's not going to be much, but we can go visit."

A Big Spring missing persons case not listed on the DPS website involves Bobby Marquez Jr.

On Thursday, his uncle, Raul Marquez, told the Reporter-News he and his family don't think the remains are of his nephew, who disappeared 14 years ago.

Marquez, a 22-year-old college student at the time of his disappearance, was last seen with a friend in Big Spring.

"His parents still grieve for him, after 14 years of being gone," he said. "We think based on all the information gathered there's a very slight chance it's him, but we're still not giving up hope."

Human remains found not those of missing Texas girl Hailey Dunn

(CBS/AP/KOSA) BIG SPRING, Texas - West Texas authorities say a medical examiner has determined that remains speculated to be those of 13-year-old missing girl Hailey Dunn, are male.

Big Spring Police Sgt. Tony Everett said on Friday that more information will be released as the autopsy continues. The FBI started collecting and analyzing evidence after some workers found the remains in a pasture Tuesday.

The determination of the gender concludes the body was not of Dunn, who has been missing for 15 months. She disappeared from Colorado City, about 40 miles east of Big Spring.

The remains were found a mile from the home of the mother of the person of interest in the case, the boyfriend of Dunn's mother.

CBS affiliate KOSA reports April Wehba is one of the many search team members who came to revamp the website they call "Hailey's Hope."

"New hope, new beginnings," Wehba said, "It took a second for us to process what we just heard. But it hit us like a ton of bricks and lifted this big weight off of my shoulders."

Search volunteer Holly Jenkins said, "I would be lying if I said I was not completely relieved that it was not Hailey." They say it is time to reconvene and begin their search once again.

Meanwhile, no one has been arrested in the former cheerleader's disappearance.

So very sad, such a young girl. I've read it over and over again to think of something to say, but I am lost for words. If the stepfather killed her, I can't imagine her mother didn't pick up anything being wrong before, sad she couldn't pick her own parents, but had to live with a stepfather and her mother who celebrated at a party just days after she disappeared. Such people should be castrated and sterilized at a young age in my opinion, let's hope they will spend the rest of their lives in jail, although it won't bring Hailey back.
