TAMPA, Florida -- Hillsborough County Sheriff's Homicide detectives have made an arrest in a homicide from 1986.

44-year-old George Olen Shrader of Ruskin is charged with first degree murder and sexual battery in connection with the January 27, 1986 homicide of 23-year-old Sharon Moss.

"The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Homicide Division will continue to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves by seeking answers and justice for the victims and their families," said HCSO Det. Larry McKinnon in a written statement.

In 1986, Moss' body was found lying in a sandy roadway in Gibsonton, where she had been stabbed to death. She was unemployed with no known home address.

During an examination of the crime scene, investigators collected soil samples taken from a trail of blood drops found in close proximity to the victim.

The samples were sent to the FBI at the time, which confirmed the blood was human. Then in 2007, the samples were sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Laboratory for further analysis. A male DNA profile was recovered from the samples and entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

Finally in December 2010, a search of the CODIS database produced a match to the DNA profile: George Shrader.

Shrader was brought in for questioning, where he denied ever knowing Moss and that on the night the victim's body was found, he cut his hand cleaning the dishes at his brother's apartment.

Shrader's brother and his girlfriend at the time told a different account to investigators. They said Shrader entered their apartment with a bleeding hand, and that it had nothing to do with cleaning dishes.

Further forensic investigation went on to link Shrader's DNA to a semen sample taken from the victims body.

Detectives say Shrader continues to deny killing Moss, but he states it is possible he had sex with her and does not remember it.
